Updated: Feb 12

One of the most common questions new writers ask is: “Where do story ideas come from?”In Week 2 of our Creative Writing course, we focused entirely on how to generate ideas and recognise inspiration in everyday life.

The good news is that writers don’t wait for inspiration — they learn how to notice it, capture it, and develop it. Ideas are everywhere once you know what to look for.

Watch the Week 2 Creative Writing Lesson:

In this session we cover:

  • Why ideas don’t have to be big to be powerful

  • Finding inspiration in ordinary moments

  • Using “what if?” questions to spark stories

  • Turning memories into writing material

  • Observing people, places, and conversations

  • Keeping an idea notebook or idea list

Idea-Starter Prompts from This Session

Try building a story from one of these:

  • A stranger says something that makes no sense — but later proves true

  • A normal day goes slightly wrong — then worse

  • Someone receives a message not meant for them

  • A small decision leads to a big consequence

This Week’s Writing Exercise

Choose one simple idea and expand it into a short scene. Focus on curiosity and possibility — not polish.

You don’t find ideas — you train yourself to notice them.
