Week 5 - Creative Writing - Building Strong Narratives

In this session, we focus on one of the most important foundations of storytelling: narrative structure.

Not the surface elements like character or setting, but the underlying framework that gives a story shape, direction and momentum.

We explore how stories are built — not to make your writing feel formulaic or restricted, but to help it work more effectively. Structure doesn’t limit creativity; it strengthens it. When you understand how narrative shape functions, your ideas land with greater clarity and emotional impact.

The most satisfying, powerful and well-paced stories nearly always have a clear structure behind them — even if the reader isn’t consciously aware of it.

In this session, we break that structure down, look at how to recognise it in published work, and practise applying it to your own writing.
